I have splashed out and got a bunch of stuff from RKH.

After a number of outdoor flights in light to moderate breezes I am determined to get more forward flight from my heli.

I have purchased the RKH swash, carbon main frame, battery holder, skid mount and boom set (I have some tasty 1000 mah, 20c batteries waiting), a tail motor mount and a carbon tail fin for giggles. This is on top of my Xtreme 180 motor, anti-rotation collar, aluminium main shaft, MH rotor head, Flybar and blade grips and generic Trex 250 skids. With trimmed down blades finishing it off I am hoping I can get some decent forward motion and some cool on-board video from my HD keyfob camera.

OMG!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

WHAT HAVE I DONE??!!!!

My wife is gonna KILL me! Sad

See... THIS is why I don't DARE get anything like a 400 or 450...I'll just never stop!

Haha you're nuts! "Hell hath no fury..." Laughing You probably could have almost gotten a 450 clone for the same price!

With that said, that swashplate and carbon fiber frame look gorgeous; I look forward to your thoughts on them. Very Happy

Well Nick, you're right, but...

A 450 clone would also need a rx, servos, batteries etc etc. I have loads of batteries for the 120sr as well as lots of other "ancillery bits".

A 450 takes a lot more space outdoors to fly in and I have trouble getting the time to go to places to fly my 120 as it is.

A 450 will cost a lot more in repairs with the inevitable crashes, and I'd have to explain all the packages arriving for that purpose...not good.

Whereas I would enjoy a bigger heli I also love my 120 and haven't flown it near enough yet and I think I have a lot more fun on the cards with it before I start all over again. The modifications are a great challenge and keep it fresh. (I'm already planning a custom canopy and styling for it and it will look VERY cool!).

I guess it comes down to knowing what I can afford to invest (not money wise) and "cutting the cloth to suit". I could afford to buy whatever I fancy in terms of helis but it would not only be unwise in terms of my marriage but it genuinely would be a waste as I couldn't put the time in the get the most out of it.

Having said all of that, I do keep looking at the bigger helis AND a quadrotor! Wink

Gotcha. I wasn't judging at all, it was just a thought.

I absolutely agree that the 120 SR is a great heli and fully worthy of upgrades.

A custom canopy is an awesome idea, can't wait to see it. I'm terrible with artistic things so eventually I want to get one of the Xtreme canopies for it.

Hi Nick, I realise now my response sounds SUPER-defensive! I didn't mean it to, I took NO offense whatsoever. Embarassed

I think I just decided to take myself seriously and state my "approach to the hobby"...LOL! Like anyone gives a flying funt! HAHAHAHAHA! Rolling Eyes

Anyway... agreed, I could easily have gone some way down a different route, shows you how much money there is in spares and upgrades.

I'm gonna make a mould of my new canopy so you never know... if it comes out well and is light enough you might have to expect a box from bonny Scotland arriving at your door in the new year!

I had my first chance to hover with the new upgrades today (yup...THAT busy).

Wow! Very steady and smooth and with the short position on the swash arms and longer ball joints there is quite an impressive range on the cyclic movement.

The frame is rigid as heck and LIGHT. I also stuck a 20mm longer tail boom on it when I fitted the rear motor mount. Result? Much reduced tail blow out even with the Xtreme motor fitted and a 25c battery.

I really like this RKH stuff, very well thought out and surprisingly light.

Yeah they do some awesome stuff. I think that, in general, RKH is better than MicroHeli. That main frame looks like a work of art.

Did you happen to weigh it before you installed it?

No, I didn't as there were a lot of non-standard parts onboard already. Theoretically the 120sr should have a standard "stock weight". It is listed as being 106 grams with a stock battery.

The frame is fantastic.

I'll take photos and video after Halloween and post them. The heli looks a lot better with a longer tail and with the Xtreme canopy on it.

My 120sr with all it's new "bling" and a Hyperion 550mah 25c battery fitted is 113 grams so considering it has a higher spec battery and the Xtreme motor I think its power to weight ratio is pretty darned good still. 7 grams above stock (without really trying) is good in my books and I know I could trim that back.

Yeah I think 7g is a fair trade even just for the added rigidity, especially with the Xtreme motor and higher-C battery.

Lookin' forward to the pics or video.

Took the 120SR out for it's first fully "blinged up" flight today.

Still gets taken for a ride by the wind (3-8 mph I would guess) but WOW...that RKH swash lets you fling it around something fierce.

I did have to nearly stall it when it went nose into the stronger wind at one point just to get it to drop so I could get some FF and keep from getting blown into some trees but at a lower altitude it was totally at my command.

A freshly charged Hyperion 550mah 25c battery gave me a solid 5-6 minutes flight time as well and I wasn't holding back much. The Xtreme motor was plenty punchy as well. The longer tail boom held it rock solid and as I wanted more control the minor reduction in piro rate wasn't missed at all.

THAT was fun.... AND fast!
