I ordered the Big Lama. The channel 12 news chopper. I think it looks cool. I ordered it from thinkRC. It was about $10. Higher there but they had the extended inner shaft and batteries in stock. I had a promo code so I got the 10 bucks back anyway. I still need to order the receiver. Thanks for the help everyone.

Thats the one I want for my new Lama but while I was ordering it I want to order some servos too. But which ones? I want to build a plane so I'm gonna order 4 or 5 servos at the same time. Which ones should I get for my plane project? Plane is to be made of foam.

Well Tom.,
I think I've answered this on another thread of yours. For most planes of around 1m span 9 gram is fine. I have one 9 gram plastic geared servo working all 4 ailerons on my 90cm Pitts and have had no problems for the last 2 years. They don't work so hard in planes as they do in helis.
Like I said in the other thread you might like to try the CG calulator that I've just finished. Love to hear how it goes for you, should install and run on any windows OS.

My new Lama is here. Now to read the book charge the battery and fly. Step one complete. Step two: The new orange receiver. This is a beautiful helicopter, and BIG too. Wish me luck all. Also I was wondering if the extended shaft is hard to change? I got that also. It seemed like a good idea from what I've seen and read about it. Thanks all.

Well I cant put the extended shaft in till I find some tools. Bummer. The 11.1 volt battery, what should the voltage be when fully charged? 12 or 13 volts? At the most. I'm using the charger on a small 12 volt battery that came from a childs riding toy car. The voltage on that thing is 12.6 volts. Well I'm off to find tools.
Tom
Update: This thing is AWESOME!!! It is a joy to fly. I think I squeeled like a little kid. It's big, faster than you think and it's just plain fun to fly. The only problem is that I only have two batteries. Gotta get more. Couldn't put the extended shaft on cause I dont have the metric allen wrench to take the bottom gear off. _________________ Esky Big Lama

Hi Tom,
Each Li-Po cell should not go below 3V discharged, stored at 3.8V~3.9V and fully charged at 4.2V.
So your 3 cell should not discharge below 9V, stored at 11.4V~11.7V and be fully charged at 12.6V. This is true for all 3 cell Li-Pos regardless of capacity. The 3V/cell discharged gives a small safety margin and this is the usual cutoff voltage that you would set on your ESC (if it's programmable).
Glad you're enjoying the heli - that's what it's all about.

From what I'm reading here I should not let my battery go below 9 volts. I only got to fly one battery yesterday. After about 4 minutes just guessing it tested at 11.5v. I think I'll look for volt meter or alert. I saw somewhere a small digital meter you can put on the heli. Won't be flying today winds are about 15 right now and getting worse. Bummer.

When flying you will notice a power drop after some minutes. That's the 'Land Now & Change Batteries' signal. The battery under load will have dropped to around 9V but off load it be higher. The digital controls are good but with a little care not essential.
Just watch for the first sign of a power drop - note the time of flight and set your timer for say 30 seconds less. That gives you a safety margin. As the batteries deteriate you will find a power drop before the timer goes off. It will soon be time to replace them when that happens.

I decided to go out and just record a short video of the spool up. I ended up flying for about 3 to 4 minutes, maybe a little longer. I didn't notice any power drop but I stopped anyway. The wind is really wicked and I didn't want to chance it. It did handle the wind very well but I didn't like it. Better safe than sorry. Decided to just work on the iPod mount today. I put my ipod touch under it. Worked out nice.
