For a heli the break should always be OFF. The break is only usefull for Planks (powered gliders mostly) to stop the prop from pinwheeling in flight when power is cut to the motor.

Agree with Dumb Thumbs on rotory wing, the brake must be off. The freewheeling rotor will control descent when power is cut. The inertia in the rotor used to go from negative into positive pitch at the last moment to soften the landing.

However, with fixed wing (unless you have a full feathering prop,) the resistance which a freewheeling prop gives will cause a very rapid descent with heavy ground impact, rarely required! The brake must be on for a "dead stick" landing with all fixed wing craft. (I fly a 3D Pitts as well as helis.)
