Well, I'm really proud of myself. I just fitted a EL LCD display backlight to my DX6i!
I got an EL panel with inverter from Amazon for £10 shipped and fitted it easily.
It isn't the brightest as it is only working off 5-6 volts (as opposed to it's optimum 12v) but it's better than squinting at an unlit screen as my heli veers off towards my TV desperately needing a bit more trim! _________________ If only I could fly as well as I spend money I don't have...

I figured the Amazon option might be cheaper and faster as I live in the UK.
It was pretty easy actually. It took me a while as I very carefully trimmed the EL panel to get the most material visable as possible. I also had to trim away a bit of plastic in the LCD mounting brackets so the EL screen would seat in fully but that was a matter of careful cutting and shaving with a scalpel.
The wiring, routing of wires and fitting of the inverter was easy-peasy. I mounted the inverter with double sided foam tape after trimming off the moulded on mounting lugs. I trimmed back the wires to eliminate any needless excess wire and soldered and heat shrunk them back up...done and done.
Like I said, it isn't the brightest of light but it's better than no light at all. I did peel the foil off the back of the LCD screen but if you choose to do this you MUST be careful not to damage the LCD matrix that is beneath it. The foil reflects light and makes the screen visable when there is no backlight. The EL panel light will shine through the foil if you leave it in place but it does cut down on the amount of light from the EL panel. I suppose if you leave the foil in you get all the function of the stock screen with a bit of light from behind to boost it. It really is a matter of preference. _________________ If only I could fly as well as I spend money I don't have...
