I was struggling with my newest quad a Whirlwind 450. Got all the components from Hobby King. I've been crying the blue because I was having trouble getting the quad up in the air.

I thought the Hobby King KK2 board was failing. I'm not sure that's the case anymore. I bought a new KK2 board from MRM (Stephen V.) on EBay. He's been a great help in providing knowledge on how to set up the KK2 and what values to put on the board for a new quad flier. Also he tested the board before he sent it. I got the board installed yesterday. Did a little hop to insure it was going to fly. This morning I had charged up several batteries so I could fly the whirlwind. Early I did my first real flight. The whirlwind is real stable, very smooth. I'm super happy with it.
I forgot. Stephen always upgrades the KK2 boards he sells to version 1.6. That version has allot of features that are improved over the 1..2 that you get with a Hobby King purchase.

Anyway here's a YouTube of the first real whirlwind flight:

Going to have all my KK2's upgraded to 1.6 by Stephen.

Lovely smooth flight there Jack. Think I might flash 1.6 on my KK2.

Hello Crash:

Total cost for 4 ESC's, 4 Motors, frame, receiver, power distribution board & KK2 board was around $ 150.00 US. Set up is real easy set up if you understand what the menu meaning on the KK2 board is.

Nothing like trying to set up a single rotor.

Lots of fun to fly. I'm still getting use to them. But you can fly them like a fixed wing airplane I'm told. I'm still pretty much flying like a singlerotor helicopter but working on buzzing around. I never did do that with all my single rotors.

I flew both the X525 and whirlwind this morning. The thing that still surprises me is when you push the elevator forward to get her moving forward when you let the stick come back to neutral the quad shoots up in the air much higher. Working on that.

I can see why quads and trimotors are taking over the RC helicopter world.

Jack

This 450 quad of mine totalled $130 USD + TX. Here it is on its 3rd flight checking self-levelling:

Great stable platform for aerial photography.

Hi Keith,

I haven't tried max lift, but with my minicam fitted I get a vertical climb rate of approx 30m/s. Can't hold it for long as it would be O.O.S. in a few seconds. Hovers nicely on 1/2 throttle. Very Happy

Current spec is:

Frame: 4-Axis HJ450 KK MK MWC RC Quadcopter Frame Set
Battery: 2600mAh, 30~40C, 3 cell
Motors: A2208 KV1100 Brushless
ESCs: HW30A 30A Brushless ESC
Props: 2 x 1045L + 2 x 1045R Multi-rotor
FCB: KK2 V1.2
Radio: Spektrum DX6i + Spektrum AR6100E Rx
Flying Weight with camera: 950gms (as measured on the wifes' kitchen scales.)

G'day Sbobby,

Never run a battery to death but 10 mins gentle photography has a good reserve for returning to base, 8 mins hard flying is max.
