one of the guys in my LHS said for holding small parts that need soldering he puts an elastic band round the handle of a pair of pliers to form a small go any where vice. |

Thats how I always do it. I also lay something heavy on the
needle-nose pliers so they can`t move. It`s a great tip.
It always seems like We could use another hand when
soldering,especially small wires, & that trick works well.
Been doing it for prolly 2 decades. You can also double
it up, & have two sets of clamps made that way. It`s
one of those "why didn`t I think of that" deals.  |

Go to harbor freight and get one of these. around ten bucks.
Called a helping hand.

The helping hand is an item I intend to get when I go back to UK - can'[t find it here in latvia ...
But what I use at moment is 'mole-grips' ... those locking grips that have screw adjustment. I close the jaws and then lightly screw till jaws hold the item without marking. Being heavy - they stay where I put.
