PostPost subject: Tail drives

Gentlemen. I'm seeking input on tail rotor drives. My question is this. Which is better, belt or shaft drive? Personally, I have used both. Belt drives seem to put more drag on battery life but are basically bullet proof. Shaft drives are smoother but the umbrella gears appear to be easily stripped on the slightest tail rotor strike. I'm considering changing over to a belt system on my 500 Pro but thought I'd illicit forum input first. Any thoughts?

500 umbrella gears are larger than 450, so more robust, Align gears -in general- are of a better engineering standard than generic pattern gears.

If the synchromesh belt tension is set just right -over centre deflection- it will not absorb excessive watts.

Just s thought, lubrication of the belt is very important. You will find lots of advice on this on the forum. We all have our own opinion as to which is best.
My 450EXI goes nuts if the belt is running dry,
Tom.

Electro static discharge problems

The synchromesh belt within the boom tube can act as a Van de Graaff generator.

The silicone spray prevents the build-up of static

Apparently, after an ESD event, some older Spektrum receivers the 6100, or 7000 series, took several seconds to restart, the "Quick Connect" versions addressed this problem.

Ground-out the boom directly to the motor mount or to the CF frame.

With the 500 TT tail the Black Umbrella gears are much stronger than the standard White ones.

Having said that there are far less issues with Belt drive especially when your learning, I have never had a static problem but I always lub with silicon spray.

I was unaware that greasing the belt was a must.

More than a must - but it MUST be silicone, anything else will spell disaster. Any other type of grease will hit the plastic parts and melt them. However much care you take when it spins up there will be spray.
