I was looking for a beginner heli and came across Ka-Planes in Melborne, FL. Great Guys! Based on their recommendation I purchased a Walkera HM5 #10. I know they have a reputation for poor electronics, however the helicopter with all its' metal upgrades has turned out to be a great choice. It had some set-up issues, but Mike, Jr. at Ka-Planes worked me through set-up and tuning. Once we got the swash plate leveled and the gain and extent on the receiver adjusted it has been a great beginner heli.
As new as I am to RC Helicopters I have only replaced (1) blade, (1) vertical fin, and oh, (1) drive gear. That comes to a total of $11.00, not bad for 3 weeks of learning to fly this little beast. Now it comes up to a 4 ft. hover, tail in, nose in, sideways. and will hold within a couple of feet, hands off! Check these guys out, www.ka-planes.com. Great folks! _________________ If it ain't broke, it will be soon! |

Is that a new model? I haven't never heard of it before?
Don't forget to let us know how well it flies and maybe post some photos of it with the upgrades |

I think this is a fairly new model. If you go to www.ka-planes.com they have some pretty detailed pictures of the heli on their web page. The little heli is around $120.00 and has a lot of metal upgrades like the swash plate, blade holders, flybar, most of the main frame. It's not perfect by any means, but for the money I think it's a great little coax for us beginners. _________________ If it ain't broke, it will be soon! |

Here is a stock photo of the Walkera HM5 #10. we finally got a chance to take the little coax outside and fly away from the limitations of the house and I was impressed. We had three battery packs and there was NO wind, dead calm. I took it to a hover, got it trimmed and got some air for a change. Took it to 12-15 feet for a little while and did some spins in both directions, a little forward/backward. Brought in back to 6 feet and flew it nose in for the remainder of the battery. Here is where I was really impressed, my son who has never flown anything more complex than AirHogs took it to a tail in hover on the first try and flew it around (kind of) for the remainder of the second battery. Then I ran it through the third pack with spins, slips, forward flight and a couple of patterns. Three packs, 24 minutes total with no major mishaps other than the wind started blowing and took it into the tall grass. For the money I'd buy a second one just in case this one suffers a serious mishap.[/img] _________________ If it ain't broke, it will be soon! |

Guys, there the 5#10 is only $89.95 + shipping from wowhobbies.com. They even take it out of box and test it before they ship it. I've had great experiences from them. The shipping is only 3 days to TX from CA. |

I have a new walkera 5#10 that I got as payment for repairing two heli's. I must say that the first thought of it was "I don't know if I really want to fool with that" but once I got it, it was on! The looks alone blew me away seeing walkera's previous work. I now fly it everyday inside the house and out! The best thing about it is that it flys on a little 3.7v 1000mah li-po, no balancing! If you're considering this little heli don't hesitate anymore, you'll love it!
I give it 9 out of 10 in the coax class! If they would give it some really cool fins on the tail instead of the blade i'd give it a full 10! |

well with as much trouble as i have had with mine i give it a 3 out of 10.....
i got mine on 1/6 and it has only flown about 5 feet high for about a few seconds when i tried to adjust my controls it slowly came back down.... i am waiting on a new rx and i might change my mind about this heli if i could ever get it to fly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ Even Eagles Can't Fly With A Broken Wing!

Hi everyone! Sorry to wake up this thread, but this is my 1st post here and I saw no point in starting another about the same topic.
I've only been flying my 5#10 for 1 week and I'm totally impressed. I've had it in the air(indoors) 12 times so far and have yet to hit anything(*knocks on wood*). Flying in my living room w/ 10ft vaulted ceilings is fun, but I can really get some indoor altitude @ work during my lunch breaks. The funny thing is...the 5#10 is so quiet that it often goes unnoticed by passers by while its in the air. I was sneaking up on co-workers with it...it was a blast.
Anyway, the only mods I've done so far is to add Xtreme CX2/LamaV4 heat sinks to the motors. I'm still getting a lot of motor heat after each flight, so I'm going to try adding a larger Helimax Rotofly heat sink to the rear motor and moving both of the smaller Xtreme heat sinks to the front motor. I've experimented with the Xtreme LamaV4 hard blades. They do seem to provide more lift, but I'm experiencing some control issues with them. I may attempt to shorten them 5mm to OE blade length to see if it helps. I also have a Maxamps.com 3.7v 1550mah 1c lipo that I've yet to try. It's slightly longer and a bit heavier than the stock lipo, so re-balancing will be required. I've ordered a Walkera tail balance block(and several other spares) but I might try adding some clay to the tail until it arrives.
I'm always open to new ideas/experiences from other 5#10 pilots...If you have them, by all means speak up!

I have my 5#10 at work with me today for some high altitude tests of the Xtreme blades. I shortened the blades yesterday and will find out how well they work during lunch today. |
