Blade SR - unable to stop spinning to the left even with full right rudder.
Bottom line - the tail rotor blade was spinning freely on the shaft - out of the box!
I noticed this when I first started to try it out. I thought it was some sort of clutch mechanism that engaged when it was needed.
I ended up crashing thinking it was just a challenge to keep heading in one direction.
Called Horizon and the tech support was very patient. After half an hour of trying this and that I asked if the tail rotor blade was supposed to spin freely. No, it was supposed to be tight on the shaft and you should notice the motor shaft spinning when turned. He had never come across this trouble before.
I added a spare washer on the inside of the shaft, reinstalled the blade and bolt and I had all kinds of rudder control.
I couldn't figure out why others on the internet never mentioned this problem and that folks were able to maintain directional control with no problem..This will not keep me from crashing but at least it will be more controlled!! |

Glad to hear that Horizon hobbis help with your 120 sr problem. They have always been there for me with excellent help. That's why I have E-flite & Blade equipment.

Apparently weird things happen between the factory and buyer. I purchased a Blade CX and had no problems at all. I bought a S300, charged the battery, released it at shoulder height, and it immediately pitched up and crashed. Turned out that the ball on the swash plate that controls pitch was broken off. I learned a lesson about checking control movement before launching. This paid off yesterday when I bought a SR 120. I charged the battery and did a control check before flying. I discovered that I had no pitch control. A closer inspection revealed that the gear wheel on the servo controlling pitch was missing. I took it back to the LHS where I had purchased it a couple of hours before. We found the gear lying in the bottom of the box. A much closer inspection revealed that there were casting flaws that webbed the gear teeth and would have resulted in a control failure even if the gear had been in place. So when did the gear come off? Don't know. The moral to the story is to never accept that RTF means ready to fly. Check everything!

+1 on that Stormrider51.
ALWAYS check for full control movement, just as a real pilot (not model flier) would. I mean before EVERY fight even after changing to the next battery. Make it a pre-takeoff routine every time and you will never go far wrong. |

I did all the preflight stuff. The motor would speed up with right rudder and stop with left rudder. However, I should have thought that if it was so intermittent, there was something wrong. Thanks for the reminder.

OMG! Have had trouble with my SR too...fine at low speed, but as the head speed increases the tail boom swings anti-clockwise! The culprit? Loose tail blade on the shaft...from the factor!
Thanks JPWollman! |
