|
|
I'm finishing a build from ground up this weekend on a E500 (Hughes 500) and know the canopies are a bugger to come off and go on due to the esc and Rx standing up on the front pod however many say they've mounted either the Rx or the 3 in 1 on the front pod lying flat and the other either the Rx or 3 in 1 on the side on one of the servo's. Even the 500 manual shows this. My choice would be the Rx flat up front with the 3 in 1 on the side of the servo.
Anyone have any issues with this and does it in fact enable you to get the canopy off without all the hassles? |

it does look like this will make the fuselage removal much easier and definitely go with the 3 in 1 on servo as shown in the manual. its narrow design will prevent the fuselage from having to be pulled apart so much that it might split. the only thing i can see to be careful of is the side/flat mounted rx on the front pod. the opening of the E500 fuse is narrow at that area so it looks like that side of the fuselage will need to be pulled over the antenna first, then the other side. i wont be able to actually try this until i get this falling out of the air issue resolved, but it looks like it will work very well . |

My E-500 came with the 3 in 1 mounted on the side but its still a real pain to get the canopy off. But since I crashed my Big Lama I now only have the
E-500 which has since been turned into a Big Lama. Mix and matched the parts. The 500 was a great flyer but I just love the look of the Lama. I bought an extra canopy and am in the process of painting it to look like the military version. OD green, the whole bit. I use to jump Hueys when I was with the 82nd. so I like the military look of it.

i went ahead and tried to install the E500 body with the textbook setup i displayed above in the pic. it wasnt any easier then having them on the front pod side by side. in fact, when i got the body on it, the motor wires were pressed so tight against the side of the body, that i was afraid it might cause the plugs to bend at their connectors on the esc. i still had to remove the rx from the pod due to the fact that it is wider than the opening of the body, which presents antenna damage possibilites. i ended up putting both back on the front pod side by side using velcro to attach them which allows me to pop them off, stick them up inside the body as i am pulling it over and in to place, then re-attach them to the velcro through the side windows after the body is on. once it is all done... i put a zip tie around the rx/esc from the side windows. |

Yeah, I left the E-500 body off. Working on a military version. Basicly I sanded the Big Lama canopy with some very fine sand paper and sprayed it OD green. In the finishing process now. Got to get the little detail right. Army insignias and the like. Gonna put a 1st Cav emblem or an 82nd on the nose. The Lama canopy goes on so much easier.

Heres a video of my Lama. Still can't get rid of the vibration. Gonna get a blade balancer and see if that helps. I'm sure it can't hurt to make sure the blades are balanced. Also at the end is a shot of the military version Lama. The last time I tried to post a video it worked so here goes.

Well Tom,
Heres my BoL blade balancer:

Don't fill the glasses until after the balancing - always keep a clear head.
